This Great Blue Heron was not happy to see us. Got him taking off. I like the orangish stripe on his wing and the little plume coming off his crown.
According to Dona, the silhouette of a Black-crowned night-heron resembles the main character in Despicable Me. I tend to agree. He’s a rather stocky, top-heavy bird. We watched many of these birds flying in to roost in the trees for the evening.
Note to self, if taking photos at dusk, bring a tripod.
This fellow finally decided I was getting too close and took off. I was ready.
I figured out that there’s a reason this particular bird is called a Night-heron. We’re talking serious daytime lethargy here. I have never watched a bird for so long, all the while getting closer and closer who seemed so utterly unmoved by my presence and could not even be bothered to fly away. My speculation was confirmed by Mr. Petereson. “The Black-crowned night-heron is usually hunched and inactive…” No kidding!
