It’s pelican week on my blog. I couldn’t resist trying to capture shots of this beautiful bird. I love the detail on the wing in this photo. I caught him just before he headed through some trees.

On this same trip we saw a Belted Kingfisher which was way cool, however my photo is not very good so not posting it.  One for the memory banks.

Over this last year I have really grown to admire and appreciate our fine feathered bird friends. One of my absolute favorites is the pelican. How can you resist that great, long bill, and watching them fly with their huge wingspan is always breathtaking. At first I was only spotting the American White Pelicans at the Baylands. Within the last month, I have been seeing the Browns at the Baylands too. Peterson describes the Brown Pelican as “a ponderous dark waterbird.” This fellow here was sitting on a railing at the end of a dock looking ponderous wouldn’t you say.
