It’s not just the birds that like to hang out at the Baylands.
I set my alarm for 5am to wake up and take photos at sunrise this morning, however, when I got up I was greeted with a cloud cover so I went back to bed. I did go out later in the morning, though still cloudy, and I wasn’t loving the light. However, I did like this curve-billed fellow. Leo and I decided this is a Long-billed Curlew not a Whimbrel as I first suspected. According to Peterson, curlews “lack dark distinct crown stripes.” No stripes here. He’s admiring himself in the reflection.
Below he’s digging deep for his meal.
I am fortunate to live near the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve, a 1,940-acre tract of undisturbed marshland. I love how tranquil it is and if you hit it at the right time, the reflections in the sloughs are amazing.
